Dr. Allen Frances, a prominent psychiatrist who credits himself with compiling the diagnosis of narcissistic personality, defended the mentally ill today on MSNBC by saying most are nice people who should not be lumped in with the likes of Donald Trump, who is simply incompetent and evil.
While I applaud Dr. Frances for protecting his patients, I don't agree that it's irresponsible to diagnose Trump with a personality disorder without seeing him in treatment. After all, psychologists have a wealth of information regarding Trump's personality and behavior at their disposal, in fact, probably more than would be available after years of traditional appointments with the average patient.
His affliction may not be severe as some, but it's obvious he lies incessantly, is totally devoid of empathy, and is self-centered to the point of the absurd. If that isn't the text book definition, someone needs to edit every piece of literature on this disorder currently available.
