CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker issued a strong statement Wednesday after the outlet's New York headquarters was evacuated due to receiving a bomb in the mail.
"There is a total and complete lack of understanding at the White House about the seriousness of their continued attacks on the media," Zucker said. "The President, and especially the White House Press Secretary, should understand their words matter. Thus far, they have shown no comprehension of that."
Journalists and CNN, in particular, have been the repeated targets of Trump's ire. He has resurrected a Hitler phrase, "the enemy of the people," to demonize reporters, and "CNN sucks" chants are a regular feature at his rallies. Trump has also tweeted out doctored video depicting him beating up on CNN, and last week he praised Rep. Greg Gianforte for assaulting a reporter who dared to ask him about health care. (Gianforte pleaded guilty to that after he won election.)
After bombs were sent to a group of prominent officials and organizations on Trump's enemies list, Trump devoted fully two minutes to encouraging people to turn down the volume on their rhetoric.
"In these times we have to unify," Trump said at a White House event on opioid addiction. "We have to come together and send one very clear strong unmistakable message; that acts or threats of political violence of any kind have no place in the United States of America."
We'll see what he says Wednesday night at his rally in Wisconsin.
