Newspapers around the nation have recently been filled with shocking stories explaining how Republicans everywhere are doing their best to strip voter rolls and disenfranchise as many Americans from the vote as possible. The insidious reason behind the GOP’s recent efforts is too disgusting to ignore, and every American needs to be aware of this plot to subvert democracy through bureaucratic and political means that stymie voting turnout.
As long as minorities and certain demographic factions don’t turn out in droves for the GOP, Republicans will continue to disenfranchise as many of them as possible to rig elections in their favor.
The GOP is the party of White voters alone
It should be clear by now for all to see that the Republican Party is singularly the party of certain White voters; while not all White Americans are members of the GOP, and indeed broad swathes of the White electorate help propel liberals to victory all the time, Republicans have maintained their political power by tapping into Whites and White men in particular for years now. This, more than anything else, is the reason the GOP is working so tirelessly to disenfranchise minority voters.
While Republicans understand that today’s election are secure from voter fraud, they continue to insist that American democracy is under constant threat from outside tampering and thus try to make it as challenging and “secure” to vote as possible. What they call voter security is really voter disenfranchisement, however, as certain policy measures that are passed specifically disadvantage certain groups more than others. African Americans may be less likely to drive in a certain region, for instance, and thus less likely to have the driver’s license ID form needed to register in their state.
Lavishing in its ability to strip the voice from American citizens, the GOP goes about the country making it as challenging as possible to vote everywhere. College students are restricted from voting by eliminating voting booths from campus areas, and Sunday voting is eliminated if it means more minorities can take a day off work to turn out and vote for progressive candidates. This insidious style of politics is contributing to the gross polarization currently besetting our country and must come to an end if America is ever to truly heal.
As long as Republicans are in power, we can expect more of this kind of dirty play. The GOP relishes power and seeks only to further advantage itself electorally compared to Democratic candidates, which means it will try to strip away the voices of as many minorities as progressive-leaning voters as possible. Its demographic advantage with White men will likely continue to make this a viable strategy for some time, too, unless widespread acknowledgement of this terrible practice occurs. We simply can’t let the Republicans get away with stripping the right to vote from tens of thousands of Americans.
If our elections are to be legitimate then voters must be allowed to head to the voting booth. As long as Republicans keep up their disgusting crusade against voting rights, American democracy will suffer.
