When Republicans aren't just blatantly lying about how they voted to get rid of the Affordable Care Act's protections for people with pre-existing conditions, they're busy running away from Donald Trump's lawsuit that would do exactly the same thing.
Axios asked six vulnerable Republicans this question: "You say in your campaign that you're committed to protecting insurance coverage for people with pre-existing conditions; what do you make of the fact that the Trump Justice Department is currently arguing in court to strike down the law forcing insurers to cover people with pre-existing conditions?" They asked Republicans Mike Coffman (CO-06), John Culberson (TX-07), Carlos Curbelo (FL-26), Mimi Walters (CA-45), Pete Stauber (MN-08), Kevin Cramer (challenging for North Dakota Senate), Josh Hawley (challenging for Missouri Senate), Martha McSally (challenging for Arizona Senate), Leah Vukmir (challenging for Wisconsin Senate) and Mike Braun (challenging for Indiana Senate) that question.
Not all of them who responded answered, but those who did all said pretty much the same thing, Axios reports. "All want to mandate that insurance companies cover people with pre-existing conditions, but only one of them disavowed the Justice Department's position." That one was Coffman, who was also one of just 20 Republicans who voted against the Republican "replacement" bill last year.
The most outstanding display of blatant hypocrisy came from Hawley's press secretary, "Josh wants Congress to mandate that insurance companies cover everyone with pre-existing conditions." That's exactly what the Affordable Care Act does. Hawley is one of the state attorneys general who is suing to have the ACA and those protections declared unconstitutional!
Once again, Republicans are counting on the willingness of their base voters to have the wool pulled over their eyes on this one. Too bad for them the rest of us are paying a lot of attention.
