Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has been one of the most unpopular Congressmen for years, often due to the sniveling visible smugness that appears on his face each time he blatantly undermines the American people in the interest of himself/corporate buddies. Yes, he’s unpopular, but Friday, ahead of the vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh into the U.S. Supreme Court, it could be said McConnell is the most hated politician in Congress today. And this sentiment is not new.
A quote in the Washington Post by Dana Milbank went viral last year. Friday it went viral again. With a public punch, and in total disgust—Milbank holds nothing back.
By rights, McConnell’s tombstone should say that he presided over the end of the Senate. And I’d add a second line: “He broke America.” No man has done more in recent years to undermine the functioning of U.S. government. His has been the epitome of unprincipled leadership, the triumph of tactics in service of short-term power.
Milbank more than justifies his opinion in his story. Here is one excerpt.
McConnell famously declared in 2010: “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.”
In his piece, Milbank also reminds his readers of another despicable McConnell comment after obstructing President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland.
After Justice Antonin Scalia’s death was confirmed last year, it took McConnell less than an hour to say that the vacancy should be filled by the next president. He called keeping Obama’s nominee off the court “one of my proudest moments.”
Of course, this is not only about what McConnell says, it’s what he had done to damage this country and its people. To read read Milbank’s full WaPo story, click here.
Thank you, Dana Milbank, for saying it out loud. Few if any could have said it better.
