Just a few weeks before Sen. Chris Murphy was sworn in, his district in Connecticut was the site of the Sandy Hook massacre. Ever since then, Murphy has been one of the most ardent supporters of common-sense gun control in Congress; he led one of the longest talking filibusters in Senate history, speaking on the topic for almost 15 hours.
In late September, he announced the NR8 fundraiser, a one-day fundraiser (held October 5) with the goal of replacing incumbent Republicans with “A” ratings from the NRA with Democratic candidates who supported gun control. It raised over $1.2 million, split among the eight candidates.
Here were the eight candidates the NR8 campaign supported:
- Josh Harder vs. Jeff Dedham in CA–10
- Mike Levin in Darrell Issa’s seat, CA–49
- Jason Crow vs. Mike Coffman in CO–06
- Susan Wild vs. Marty Nothstein in PA–07
- Lizzie Pannill Fletcher vs. John Culberson in TX–07
- Colin Allred vs. Pete Sessions in TX–32
- Jennifer Wexton vs. Barbara Comstock in VA–10
- Jacky Rosen vs. Dean Heller in NV–Sen
And now, I’ll let Sen. Murphy sum things up:
For those who can’t see it:
You wanna know how the politics of guns has changed?
The #NR8 campaign raised $1 million for 8 swing races where:
(a) incumbent Republican was A rated by NRA
(b) Dem candidate ran strong on anti-gun violence message
With Harder’s win, all 8 of the NR8 candidates won
Congratulations to the winners, to Sen. Murphy, and to everyone else who supported gun control candidates!
