For all those who thought the Russia investigation was drifting toward a conclusion, one in which Paul Manafort and Roger Stone might be the high point for indictments, the last week has been a wake-up call. Special counsel Robert Mueller has demonstrated that his focus is still directly on events surrounding the 2016 election, and squarely on “Individual 1,” a.k.a. Donald Trump. And now Politico is reporting that Mueller has a new player on deck, a “mystery witness.”
Special counsel Robert Mueller appears to be locked in a dispute with a mystery grand jury witness resisting giving up information sought in the ongoing probe into alleged Trump campaign collusion with Russia.
Mueller may be in a tug-o’-war with this witness, but he, she, or it is slated to appear before the grand jury on Dec. 14. Apparently, this resistant witness has fought testifying in district court. And lost. Twice. And in the court of appeals. And lost. Twice. And all of that happened behind such tightly locked doors that the name of this witness still isn’t known.
The witness could just be another Roger Stone associate, nailing down the already pretty well nailed connection between Stone and WikiLeaks. Considering the timing, it could be someone who has inside info on the Trump Tower Moscow deal (Trump Organization chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg is still an unheard-from source). It could be someone ready to testify on something that has slid out of view—like the high jinks of Cambridge Analytica and Trump’s Russia-connected IT team. It could be Eric.
So … speculate away.
