Back toward the beginning of December, DailyKos endorsed Delegate Jennifer Boysko in her run for the 33rd State Senate District of Virginia. This Special Election was called as a result of the seat’s current legislator — Jennifer Wexton — ascending to Congress after defeating long-time entrenched Republican Babrara “Bumpstock” Comstock on November 6th.
Now with only 9 days before the Special Election (yes, it’s on January 8th), it’s all hands on deck to make sure Delegate Boysko succeeds Senator Wexton and keeps Democrats at a narrow 41-39 minority in our State Senate. This is not a surefire win for us, either; the district is purple, and contains portions of deeply red territory.
That’s why I went up to Sterling (an area of Loudoun County) to knock on doors and speak to voters about the election today. Team Boysko has already been doing a great job getting the word out, as many of the folks I talked to were already aware of the election, and were going to vote for Jennifer. Here’s the thing, though — there were still some voters who had no idea there was an election; or thought they since they had voted last month that there’s nothing to vote for until at least November of next year!
As with last year’s big elections here in Virginia, the first test of Democratic strength will come in the form of Special Elections. Back then it was Jackie Smith in her bid for Prince William County’s Clerk of the Court. Now, we have Jennifer Boysko in her race for the State Senate.
