Rep. Adam Schiff, the likely future chair of the House Intelligence Committee, appeared on Face the Nation this morning. And while he’s clearly a partisan observer, he thinks Donald Trump might actually — gasp! — spend some time in prison.
Asked about the filings federal prosecutors made on Friday that appear to link Trump to campaign finance violations, Schiff didn’t mince words:
"My takeaway is there's a very real prospect that on the day Donald Trump leaves office, the Justice Department may indict him — that he may be the first president in quite some time to face the real prospect of jail time.
"We have been discussing the issue of pardons that the president may offer to people or dangle in front of people. The bigger pardon question may come down the road, as the next president has to determine whether to pardon Donald Trump.
"Now I think the prosecutors in New York make a powerful case against that idea. All the arguments they make about Michael Cohen, the idea that while people are out walking precincts and doing what they should do in campaigns, the rich and powerful seem to live by a different set of rules. This was the argument for putting Michael Cohen in jail on these campaign violations; that argument, I think, was equally made with respect to Individual-1, the president of the United States."
Don’t tease me, Adam Schiff. Of course, If Trump does go to prison, we could pay down the national debt in, like, two years. I mean, how much would you pay to visit him in jail and shoot wet garbage at him from a T-shirt cannon? I’m just not sure which would be more fun: firing leftover Indian food at him straight through the bars or in the exercise yard, where he could, at least in theory, “run” around like a morbidly obese gnu.
One can dream. But, please, don’t get my hopes up.
