It’s Presidents’ Day, a day to become... highly reflective… and while we’re at it, let’s look into how this “president” got here, and why he’s still here. The Angry and McMuffin-laden Dotard lashed out in an angry and error-laden tweetstorm over the weekend, and David Waldman, Greg Dworkin and Armando help us figure out the world that has allowed this to happen.
Russia wanted Trump to win, or at least the US to lose. Collusion - conspiracy, treasonous - traitorous, let’s call the whole thing off? No, because what is incontrovertible is Donald Trump’s illegitimacy, we are just working out the details. The media isn’t so sure yet, but If Trump took the time to blurt out hints on every scheme he has his little fingers in, he wouldn’t have time to golf.
Institutions can’t save America from Trump, and neither can a defeatist attitude. But it is not fatalism to acknowledge that Democrats and Republicans are not mirror images, Republicans can get the vote if their supporters believe their heart remains in the same basically deplorable place. Will the kids get us out of our messes? Don’t bet against them.
On the other hand, Russian trolls and entrenched beliefs will remain hardy. Nothing in the Constitution prevents sensible gun rules, but plenty of lawmakers will.
