The NRA would have us believe that the current discussion about guns in America is about the 2nd Amendment. It is not.
This issue is, and always has been, about—money!
The Parkland shooting, simply, was good for business.
Every time there is a mass shooting, a hue and cry goes up for gun control. When that happens, the NRA, the GOP, gun manufacturers, and the Alt-right broadcast, “They are trying to take our guns away!!” Then gun sales spike. The more guns there are, the more likely another mass shooting will occur. Then another shooting happens.
Rinse, repeat!!
The truth is that your son’s or daughter’s or friend’s life isn’t worth what a few more guns sales are worth. Not to the NRA. Not to the gun manufacturers. Not to the politicians that have been bought and paid for with gun money.
Marching isn’t going to change this. Neither are TV appearances, town halls, or embarrassing your Representative or Senators.
If we are going to ever get common sense gun laws in this country, first we have to get their attention. We have to stop the flow of money.
First, confront your state and federal Representatives and Senators. Write them. Call them. Tell them if they take another dollar from the NRA or gun manufacturers or listen to NRA lobbyists, that you won’t vote for them. Mean it! If you have to, write your own name into the ballot when your representative or senators run for re-election. According to Politifacts, “If you add it all up -- candidate and party contributions, independent expenditures, and lobbying -- the NRA has spent $203.2 million on political activities since 1998.”
Second, if you own stocks and bonds, go through your portfolio and divest yourself of all stocks for these 147 companies. According to Business Insider, the overwhelming bulk of the NRA’s income comes from gun makers and related industries, not memberships.
Third, boycott companies that support the NRA agenda. Contact the companies on this list from Huffington Post and tell them you will boycott them until they break financial ties with the NRA.
When we put a dent in their income, they will begin to listen.
