Oh what a tangled web we weave
When first we practice to deceive
Sir Walter Scott
If you like comedy at all, I’m sure you’ve seen the old vaudeville skit. Idiot 1 puts a ladder up to a scaffold and gets off to grab something from the scaffold. Idiot 2 comes along and takes the ladder somewhere else to climb up on something else. Idiot 1 comes back, theatrically steps where the ladder used to be, and plummets to the ground, whatever he was carrying crashing down on top of him.
When you stop to think about it, the above paragraph is a perfect description of the political kabuki we’re currently seeing in the Nunes memo farce. Every defense lawyer will tell you that when your client is guiltier than original sin, your best bet is to put the prosecution on trial instead. That’s what Trump and/or Nunes just tried to do. Let’s take a quick moment to line up the dominoes before we knock them down.
Trump is in deep kimchi with the Mueller investigation. So, his faithful sycophant, Devin Nunes decided, with or without coordination with the White House (my personal opinion is with, it’s the newest “midnight ride”) to kill the FBI investigation by showing that it was “fruit from a poisoned tree,” having been started with an illegal FISA warrant based on the Christopher Steele dossier. The Democrats smell the rotten fish, and create their own memo, dissecting the fallacy of the Nunes memo. The House Intel committee votes to release their memo, but not the Democratic rebuttal memo. 72 hours after the Nunes memo lands like a dead pachyderm, the Intel committee votes unanimously to release the Democratic memo.
Here’s the McGuffin. Somebody o the GOP side is going to end up looking like a grade A #1 schlemiel. Trump justified releasing classified investigatory information under the guise of total transparency. If he now refuses to allow the Democratic memo to be released, he looks about as transparent as a cement curtain. And the GOP House Intel committee members set him up perfectly to be the obstructionist fall guy by themselves voting to make the Democratic memo public.
But...If instead Trump ends up folding his tent and actually releasing the Democratic memo to the public, Devin Nunes ends up being Greyhound road kill. The Democratic memo will show in point by point rebuttal what a deceitful, deceptive, Nunes will come off looking like a pathetic little toady, desperately trying to deceive the American public with a weak, pathetic tissue of lies that a rubber room resident wouldn’t take credit for. And if it can ever be proven that there was actual coordination with the White House in the crafting of this blivet, everybody involved will need a lawyer to try to wriggle out of a possible obstruction of justice charge for attempting to mislead and discredit an ongoing investigation.
You gotta hand these people credit, they’ve finally constructed the perfect mouse trap. My only hope is that whomever goes under the bus drags the pusher by the lapels right under the wheels with them. With this crowd, I think Forrest Gump’s mother summed it up perfectly, “Stupid is as stupid does.” The wheels of the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round.
