The New York Times is reporting that special counsel Robert Mueller has issued subpoenas to the Trump Organization.
The breadth of the subpoena was not clear, nor was it clear why Mr. Mueller issued it instead of simply asking for the documents from the company, an umbrella organization that oversees Mr. Trump’s business ventures. In the subpoena, delivered in recent weeks, Mr. Mueller ordered the Trump Organization to hand over all documents related to Russia and other topics he is investigating, the people said.
Mueller’s focus seems to be squarely on Trump’s activities in Russia. Recent reports have indicated that, while Trump has maintained that he has no holdings in Russia, representatives for the Trump Organization were actively negotiating for a property in Moscow much more recently than Trump has admitted. That includes information contained in the Democratic summary of the House Intelligence Committee’s Russia investigation.
... the Committee has learned, candidate Trump’s private business was actively negotiating a business deal in Moscow with a sanctioned Russian bank during the election period.
This is the first public reveal that the special counsel is directly looking into the Trump Organization and requiring Trump’s wholly-owned business to hand over documents. Not only does this represent Mueller stomping all over one of Trump’s supposed “red lines,” as the Times reports, but …
The subpoena is the latest indication that the investigation, which Mr. Trump’s lawyers once regularly assured him would be completed by now, will drag on for at least several more months.
