It’s been a windy, grey, windy, rainy, did I mention windy sort of day here in the metro Boston area. We’ve got a winter storm wreaking havoc today- a good old-fashioned nor’easter! Oh I know these days we have to invoke the polar vortex (it split) and bombogenesis (aka “the storm got really strong really fast”) in order for a storm to qualify as Weather Channel sexy, but whether it’s a bomb cyclone, a big nor’easter, or we just look outside and go “whoa! windy! and rain (or snow, or mix depending on your location”), it’s bit. The major worry besides downed trees is the risk of coastal flooding because the high tides are SO high. How high?
Thankfully I wasn’t flying today. Instead, I watched the tree in our backyard that got uprooted in a prior storm, is leaning on another tree, and scheduled to be removed… next Wednesday. After every set of wind gusts I go peek to make sure it hasn’t come down on our back fence- thankfully there are no buildings it can hit, but it will dent our chain-link fence and possibly take out the neighbor’s cable. Please join me in a virtual TreeWatch with a glass of something fortifying (be it alcohol, caffeine, sugar, or just the best mug of hot herbal tea ever) and join us below the story break and a word from our sponsor, to think about a better topic than my shaking the tree… the weekend!!!
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. Casa Brillig has a pretty good weekend lined up:
Saturday mornings K2 has martial arts practice. He’s been taking lessons since January and the difference we see in his strength and flexibility is remarkable! It’s a mixed-age youth class with kids ranging from 3-14 years old and no matter what the mix of ages and abilities, everyone gets a great session and good positive feedback and help.
While Mr. Brillig and K2 are at martial arts, I’ll be driving north to Portland to (as I mentioned in my Top Comments last Saturday) see a high school classmate for the first time since high school! We weren’t friends then, due to different social circles, but the miracle of social media has gotten us in touch and talking. We’re both looking forward to spending the day getting to know one another all over again!
Sunday morning K2 will be visiting a local mosque with his church school class, as part of their curriculum learning about other religious traditions besides our own. I sorta wish I was attending as a chaperone or driver just for the experience, but after lots of driving on Saturday and my own plans later Sunday, I decided not to go. K2 is looking forward to this trip, in part because it does not conflict with soccer practice earlier in the morning.
Sunday evening I’ll be working with the senior high youth group helping herd cats as they plan next week’s Youth Service, which they do annually. I’ve been assured that the dread feeling I have about all of their thoughts coalescing into an actual one hour service is unwarranted and that it ALWAYS comes together beautifully. Since the last 9 have, I’ll assume we won’t be bucking tradition.
Throughout the weekend, Mr. Brillig (and I) will be doing the exciting work of cleaning up, repairing and refinishing part of our downstairs bathroom in preparation for our washer/dryer delivery Monday morning. The washer was leaking as it gave up the ghost, so the floor was… well. Fifteen years of lint plus water plus birds apparently nesting in the dryer vent made for interesting cleaning. Thank you bleach.
What’s on tap for your weekend? Work, fun, sleep, or some combination of all four? Let us know in the comments, after you take a look at what this long-running community diary series serves up nightly: the Top Comments, Mojo and Pictures trio that can’t happen without you!

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. From MikeTheLiberal:
I’m recommending the comment by kurious in teacherken’s diary "...such utter chaos and blatant corruption.". This points out what’s obvious to most educated people, but we still need to say it, over and over, until “the deplorables” understand just what they’ve wreaked on America.
