Donald Trump is busy trying to make it look like everyone in the world wants special counsel Robert Mueller gone and thinks James Comey is a liar, but a new poll shows a very different reality. Americans say that Trump campaign collusion with Russia is fair game. And that Trump’s business activities are fair game. And so, for that matter, are hush money payments to Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal and whoever else is out there:
Nearly 7 in 10 adults say they support Mueller’s focus on possible collusion with Russia. Sixty-four percent say they want the special counsel investigating Trump’s business activities. And a 58 percent majority supports investigating alleged payments by Trump associates to silence women who say they had affairs with him.
As for Comey, the man who Trump and the Republican Party are working overtime to brand a liar and “untruthful slime ball,” it’s not that Americans love him, it’s just that they trust him more than they do Trump, with 48 percent saying he’s more believable than Trump and 32 percent saying Trump is more believable. Although given Trump’s record of lying, we shouldn’t be seeing 32 percent of people call him more believable than anyone, from jailhouse informants to toddlers to participants in a study on pathological lying.
But we only get to a resolution on Comey through Mueller’s investigation, and that’s why Trump is out there recruiting his friends to call for Mueller’s firing as if it was their own idea—so that when he does fire Mueller, he can press the media to talk about all the people who agreed with the move, as if they were part of some major organic movement. Reality, though, is that a very strong majority of Americans support Mueller’s investigation and think Trump should be under that legal microscope.
