Searching for a topic for today’s diary, I got this battered appliance down from the top shelf.
I can’t remember how long I’ve had this George Foreman grill, or who gave it to me. I assume it was a gift, it’s the kind of one-use machine that I try to avoid cluttering my kitchen with. It’s still here because what it does, it does well. On my list that’s two things: chicken breast and grilled sandwiches.
Their website has a bigger variety of recipes than that, as well as 50-some different grills available (though some of those are just color options). But it seems like most of those recipes are for the fancier grills with features like adjustable temperature. The grilled rectangular pizza looks pretty advanced compared to what I can do. The other recipes I read made me think “that’s a great idea, now I’ll go find a better recipe for it.”
Mostly I use mine for quick preparation of marinated boneless skinless chicken breast. I keep a bag of Trader Joe’s chicken breasts in the freezer and thaw as needed. This is a dry piece of meat at best and the clamshell grill tends to make the outside tough, but it’s quick and easy for just feeding me. I can start some rice cooking, then after a few minutes plug in the grill, make salad while it’s preheating, then cook the chicken.
Lunch today was grilled ham and Muenster cheese on sourdough.

The dinner plan here tonight is pretty much the same as last week’s: slow cooker pork “carnitas”, which I cooked on Thursday. This time I put a serrano and a pasilla chile and some oregano in with the meat for extra flavor and I like it a lot.
I’ll accompany that with homegrown produce. My artichoke crop is here, and I also have lettuce for salad. I’ll save the zucchini for another day.
