House Speaker Paul Ryan is painting a dire picture of what could happen if Democrats take the House in November’s elections: Donald Trump might be subject to oversight.
House Speaker Paul Ryan warned that Democratic gains in November’s congressional elections could make it impossible to get anything accomplished and expose President Donald Trump’s administration to more aggressive oversight.
Should Republicans lose control of either the House or Senate, “you’ll have gridlock, you’ll have subpoenas,” with the whole legislative system “shutting down,” Ryan said Wednesday in Beverly Hills, California, at the annual Milken Institute Global Conference.
As for gridlock, just listen to the man talking as if Republicans had used their control of Congress to rack up an impressive legislative record. They’ve passed an unpopular tax bill and spent a lot of time undoing Obama-era worker, environmental and consumer protections, while the Senate has rubber-stamped Trump’s unqualified, corrupt nominees.
Republicans want to use government to do bad things. We’re lucky that they haven’t been more effective at it, but if all a Democratic House could do would be stop bad things from happening by putting a check on Trump, that would be an improvement.
