The Richmond Times Dispatch published an editorial titled “The Democrats' diminishing moderation” in which they questioned the winnability of all three Democratic candidates running in VA-01. With a Congressional representative that never shows his face around town, we know the real story about the 1st District.
“Keep in mind that the First District is not exactly Berkeley by the Bay. It went for Trump 53-40 and the incumbent, Republican Rob Wittman, won re-election in 2016 by 60-37. A few years ago a Democrat who held such views could not win a Democratic district in Virginia, let alone a Republican one. If this is what Virginia Democrats are putting forward as representative, then the party’s center of mass has moved sharply to the left.”
Dear Editor,
You’re right. The 1st Congressional District is not Berkeley. My district is made up of 19 counties and one city – covering parts of Central Virginia, the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula – where each region is uniquely impacted by its own set of issues. The impeachment of President Trump does not sit high on the list of real-world problems that the hardworking families of the 1st District face every day.
My agenda focuses on our community, our veterans and our military families. I’m fighting for teachers and first responders. I want to find long-term solutions to bottlenecks in our infrastructure and make sure that people can afford and gain access to healthcare. I have not called for the impeachment of President Trump; especially before the outcome of an ongoing investigation. My focus is on an agenda that represents the people. Any news to the contrary is fiction, devoid of context and honesty.
It’d be easy to assume that an incumbent-held seat in a red district will safely be won again by Rob Wittman based on a single news headline, but I can tell you that’s far from the truth. Both Democrats and Republicans alike are fed up with Wittman’s disappearing act and his prioritization of defense contracts in other districts over the people in his own district.
I can tell you after visiting firehouses, talking to military families and listening to hardworking men and women, people in the district want someone who can effectively lead. They want more than a rubber stamp politician. They want repairs to a broken healthcare system, investment in our local and national economy and reform in our communities. People want someone like me to fight for them on Capitol Hill: a mother, a public servant and a wife of a small business owner.
I’m happy to see the Richmond Times-Dispatch take an interest in the first Democratic primary the 1st District has held in my lifetime. I invite you to learn more about my campaign and where I stand on the issues. I think your readers would appreciate reading about the historic nature of this race and my vision for a common sense agenda that works for the common good.
