Yesterday I woke up to Mika talking about Trump’s unhinged Tweet-tantrum and wrote Mika Brzezinski sums up Trump's state of mind in THREE WORDS: HE’S NOT WELL after reading Trump's morning Tweets. and readers were interested enough to write over 140 comments.
This morning I got up, made my coffee, let Mac and Duff out on the peeing patio, turned on MSNBC where they were talking about the only good news of yesterday (Roseanne Barr), and as I often do, and clicked HUFFPOST first thing to see their lead story.
And then The New York Times:
And the predictable Fox News spin on Roseanne:
And then I check out Trump’s morning Tweet-storm which missed the entire point of what Gowdy said and the implications of him saying it, on Fox News of all places.
As obnoxious as Gowdy and the Trump toadying GOOPERS in Congress are (feel free to rant about that cabal of lying liars) most of them aren’t head-up-their-asses stooopid. They aren't living in the delusional grandiose nobody can touch me because I am the emperor world of Trump’s mind.
(Somebody might remind Trump how many other despots ended up swinging from a gallows rope or under a guillotine blade, but that's another story.)
My reasonably educated hunch is that the major of members of Congress don’t rely on Fox News to keep informed. They read and view the same media we do. They know the impact Fox News has on their base but also follow the reports about the metastasizing evidence that Trump is headed towards impeachment. They also know that while the red meat base of Trump supporters in their constituencies love Roseanne, they also love Disney as a conceptual conscience for what is good and moral in America. I'm reminded of Walter Cronkite as America's conscience saying we'd lost the Vietnam War.
The craven Republicans know that many of them only have to lose 5% of their supporters to lose their seats in Congress. Erosion can occur after a hurricane, but it often occurs after a series of smaller storms.
The small storms of a year ago have been growing more and more powerful and more frequent.
What Gowdy is doing is positioning himself for the day when irrefutable evidence is presented in the Mueller Report.
By essentially saying that Trump has nothing to worry about because he is innocent Gowdy and other Republicans are really saying if he’s innocent. This is for public consumption.
I think many of them are coming to the conclusion that Trump is Al Capone level guilty and like the infamous “Scarface” he may go down for a crime like tax evasion the way Capone did.
