I’m revisiting what Republicans in the House proposed back in February. Those changes have not become law. I hope they do not. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — SNAP — is what food stamps are called now.
On average, nationwide, SNAP provides about $200 a month on a debit card for a household with two adults and two kids. What’s proposed is to reduce the cash value on the card by 75% to just $50 for a month. In addition to that $50, households will get $100 in kind. Households will be able to get $100 worth of shelf stable groceries, not fresh food, where designated by the individual states, upon presenting the debit card and a proper photo id.
Instead of buying $150 worth of fresh food for the month any time any where in 168 hours in a week — the Poor will have 40 hours a week to get $100 worth of shelf stable groceries at 1 location per county.
$50 cash on a card per month for a Poor household for SNAP. The federal income tax cut gave Rich households with incomes above $1,000,000 — $6300+ a month.
The “Freedom Caucus” in the House has a problem with this.
They say the Rich should get MORE.
They say the Poor should get LESS.
They say $1.66 cash for 4 people for 3 meals per day — 14 cents per person per meal is TOO MUCH.
