Received this e-mail today from U.S. Senator Jon Tester’s (D. MT) re-election campaign:
I need your help.
More than 30,000 acres of public land at the doorstep of Yellowstone National Park are under threat of being opened up to mining when their temporary protection expires later this year.
Two major mining corporations are already making plans to mine near Yellowstone, potentially devastating one of our state’s greatest natural treasures and economic drivers.
That’s why I’m leading a bipartisan coalition of business and community leaders to introduce the Yellowstone Gateway Protection Act, which provides permanent protection to the lands north of Yellowstone National Park. Sadly, leaders in Congress have been dragging their feet on giving our bill a vote.
This is where you come in. I need you to pressure Congress to move this urgent legislation forward before it’s too late:
Sign my urgent petition right now demanding Congress put the Yellowstone Gateway Protection Act on the floors of the House and Senate to protect our public lands.
Mining has always played an important role in our state -- but there are just some places too important to mine and the Paradise Valley is one of them.
A mine at the doorstep of Yellowstone could be devastating to our heritage and our outdoor economy, which alone sustains more than 70,000 jobs and generates over $7 billion to our economy.
Protecting this precious resource shouldn’t be left up to bureaucrats in Washington and mining corporations. That’s why we need Congress to act now. Add your name today.
Thanks for everything you do,
—Jon
