Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign chair Paul Manafort has been jailed after violating the terms of his bond release. Manafort was indicted by special counsel Robert Mueller on charges of conspiracy, money laundering, and illegal lobbying for foreign governments. Those charges have twice been expanded on in court filings while Manafort remained under house arrest.
Manafort’s bail has now been revoked after Mueller presented new evidence that the former Trump campaign chair used his time since his indictment to engage in witness tampering.
During a morning spent wandering around the White House lawn, Donald Trump went out of his way in an attempt to distance himself from Manafort, claiming that “He had nothing to do with my campaign” and that Manafort had only worked for him for 45 days. However, Manafort actually worked for Trump for over 145 days, was present for the infamous Trump Tower meeting with Russian agents, and was a key player in selecting Mike Pence as Donald Trump’s running mate.
