I have a Bible, so I hauled it out yesterday to see exactly what Paul had to say in his letter to the Romans that got Jeff Sessions and Sara Huckabee Sanders all excited about taking children away from their parents and putting them behind chainlink fences.
Yes indeed, verses 1-7 seem to support their claim that lawfulness is next to godliness. But Chapter 13 continues with verses 8-10, with the title “Love Fulfills the Law.” Let’s take a look-see:
“Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandments...are summed up in this saying, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Love does no evil in the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law.”
What? You mean that following heartless laws isn’t the only way to fulfill the law? That the REAL way to fulfill the law is to love your neighbor? Interesting.
Seriously, I am so sick of radical right-wingers hijacking Christianity and creating it in their own image. Liberal Christians need to start stepping up, speaking up, and actually quoting the Bible back to these people. We’ve been letting them get away with it because we don’t think religion should be a part of politics. But by doing this, we’re letting them get away with lies and half-truths about what the guy pictured above actually said. I, for one, am going to take my Bible to the next town hall meeting I go to for my Republican representative. We’ll see if the crowd boos when a Democrat starts quoting the Bible…
