Customs and Border Patrol has delivered 81 young children in the last six weeks alone from the U.S.-Mexican border to a Christian adoption and foster-care agency in Grand Rapids, Mich., for temporary placement, according to reports. The influx started in April.
One baby delivered to Michigan was three months old.
About 90% were forcibly taken from their parents, said a spokesperson for Bethany Christian Services. The agency has run out of foster homes to place children and is seeking applicants. They intend to care for the childen until they can be returned to their families, the spokesperson said.
Children are often delivered without any information as to where their parents are held; Michigan agency personnel telephone to detention facilities trying to locate the parents, which can take weeks.
The children, who may not have even had the chance to say goodbye to their parents, “struggle and panic.”
Statement from the Michigan Department of Civil Rights decries the situation but says there is nothing they can do.
The Michigan adoption and foster care agency is associated with Bethany Global, which operates on five continents according to its website.
