Today’s ruling in Janus v. AFSCME is obviously disappointing to us progressives.

So how will we respond? Will we wallow in defeatism or self-pity? Or will we fight back?

I’m fighting back — and I hope you are too.

Like my grandfather, I’m a proud member of the UAW. Grandpa was a member of Local 600 during many of his 45 years working at the famous River Rouge plant. Now — with my incumbent Republican county commissioner retiring in a district won by Hillary Clinton — I’m running to give workers and other underrepresented groups a much-needed seat at the table.

I'm the only Kent County Commission candidate in any district to be endorsed by AFSCME Council 25.

I'm also the only candidate in my district who is using local and union printing services for my yard signs and literature. (Think about that: My Democratic primary opponents’ yard signs don’t even have the union label on them. And one of them — a former Republican precinct delegate endorsed by the right-wing Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce — doesn’t even have the union bug on her literature.)

On top of that, I’ve incorporated workers’ rights into my comprehensive platform — making me the only candidate to do so.
