The thought that President Donald Trump could soon be replacing retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy with a hardline conservative judge makes my anger boil not at him, nor at Mitch McConnel who denied President Barack Obama that same prerogative, but at Susan Sarandon and all those on the Left who refused to vote for Hillary Clinton because she was “corrupt” and not “authentic” and “likable” enough.
No, don’t tell me I’m relitigating the past that’s long gone. Because of her action and the millions on the Left who took a cue from her, most of the values most of us on this side of the equation stand for are now perilously close to being stamped out by a soon-to-be 6 – 4 Supreme Court. It means for the next 50 or 60 years, liberal values which had gained ascendancy under Obama will be put through the shredder at the hands of a conservative court. For Christ’s sake, how could all the critics on the Left not have had the imagination to see that?
Justice Kennedy’s retirement has two further implications. First, it means the House is no longer certain to flip to the Democrats because the Republicans now have an issue that will mobilize and drive them to the polls in numbers not before seen. Don’t tell me this would have the same effect for the Democrats. If the prospect of a Hillary Clinton-appointed Supreme Court judge cut no ice with them, what makes you think this would? Secondly and more ominously, a 6 – 4 Supreme Court could imperil the Robert Mueller probe and accelerate Trump’s path to full-blown autocracy. It is only a matter of time before Trump gets a subpoena from the Muller team to testify. I expect Trump to ignore that subpoena. What are Mueller’s chances of victory if he goes to a 6 – 4 Supreme Court to seek an enforcement of that subpoena?
Or is anyone certain Mueller would prevail in such a scenario?
