It's been nearly a month since Melania Trump made her last public appearance. She hasn’t been seen or heard from since. She didn’t appear at any Memorial Day ceremony, which was a first for a First Lady. She did not accompany her husband to the presidential family retreat at Camp David.
Try to imagine if this was Michelle Obama. The media would be going nuts. You’d see countdown clocks and interviews with close friends and associates. Rightwing outlets would be raking her over the coals for failing in her duties—such as honoring veterans on Memorial Day. Alex Jones and Hannity would be suggesting she was murdered by the same cabal who killed Vince Foster.
Three weeks ago, Melania had surgery for a “benign kidney condition”, but it was announced the op was a success and there were no complications. Yet quite oddly, Donald Trump, when asked about her the following week, pointed to a window in the East Wing and said “She’s doing great. She’s looking at us right there."
Reporters noted there was nobody there.
Even more odd was a tweet from the First Lady’s Twitter account on May 30, which read
“I see the media is working overtime speculating where I am & what I’m doing. Rest assured, I’m here at the @WhiteHouse w my family, feeling great, & working hard on behalf of children & the American People."
That entire tweet is uncharacteristic of the First Lady’s style, but is very much along the lines of something a certain orange-colored gnome would write. For example, the First Lady has never once spoken, much less tweeted, the terms “working overtime” and “working hard”. Yet media outlets were quick to point out those are favorite staples of her husband.
In fact, here are over a dozen recent Donald Trump tweets that turn those same phrases.
As to where Melania is, I don’t really know and I don’t really care. There are several places I know she is not:
- In Puerto Rico, consoling hurt American citizens who are still suffering
- At Border stations, arguing for humane treatment of migrant children
- In Congress, advocating for common sense gun reform or children’s access to healthcare
- Anywhere doing anything for any cause that she said she cares about (like bullying)
I am much more concerned for the 1500 missing migrant children that this administration callously lost as opposed to a self-absorbed, entitled gold digger. Wherever she is, I’m sure she’s fine—we do have a Secret Service.
Yet the media’s treatment of this whole situation is very perplexing, to say the least.
This same media had no issue diving into the lives of Hillary and Michelle in the White House, but they seem to treat Melania very differently---almost patronizingly.
I’m not the only one who’s noticed:
Amen.
Calling her a “victim” is an insult to real victims everywhere.
Yes, it sucks he’s a scumbag—but I don’t feel sorry for you. You knew that when you married him. You knew that when you were the other-other-other woman.
In the meantime, you have ONE job! Pick a cause, any cause, and advocate for it. Be a voice for the afflicted. Use your platform. Help others.
You have an entire staff of highly paid people (whom I pay for) who cater to you. You’ve even expanded your staff. Your damn assistants have assistants. What exactly does your “Director of Policy" do, btw? You have no issues!!
The least you could do is try to use your office to make lives better for the remaining two years you are there. That way, at least one person in the White House would be helping people. Imagine—one person in the Trump family who thinks of someone else.
Be that person, Melania. I want to like you. Give me a reason.
