Yes, I do think Michael Moore is right. We are looking at the distinct possibility of a civil war. No, I am not being hyperbolic, am I being realistic. And so is he.
Michael Moore was dead on about Trump getting elected in the first place, something most of the rest of us could not imagine under the worst of circumstances. We believed Hillary would get many more votes than Trump. And we were right. Except somehow or another, by Russian manipulation or GOP gerrymandering, or whatever the hell happened, we were wrong. And on 11/9/2016 we faced a horrific reality— we were going to be stuck with Trump for the indefinite future. And immediately we realized that the game-plan regarding the Supreme Court would be a major part of the rolling Trump disaster. Once the votes were counted and it was clear that Merrick Garland could never be a Supreme Court justice, the true horror of the Trump presidency began to unfurl. The full reality blossomed this week. And we know it is just the beginning if Trump gets to appoint another Supreme Court justice.
But beyond that, we at a point in time where we will have to fight like hell to stop the slide into dictatorship, the complete stripping of civil rights, the ravaging of any kind of ethics. We are sliding into racial and ethnic divisions— not necessarily among the populace, but among those who have the actual power and those who support them. The American oligarchy, including the likes of the Koch brothers, Betsy DeVos and her brother Erik Prince, will do whatever they think they have to in order to maintain their power. We have already seen that they will drive ever deeper divisions between us, no matter who is harmed .
With Trump, we are quite literally looking at a crime family that is involved in massive money laundering, that doesn’t give a damn about education or health care or the environment or civil rights or competent management of government departments or having qualified diplomats in countries around the world or at the United Nations. There is no sense of actual American patriotism, only the phony flag-hugging and the disgusting “salutes” to those who are actually serving in the military.
Michael Moore has explained on Colbert and on Bill Maher’s shows the past couple of nights his insights. He urges everyone to get out and vote, and to do everything they can to stop this slide into fascism. He insists that we cannot pretend it can’t happen here.
He also has produced what promises to be a blockbuster documentary called “Farenheit 11/9” about the disastrous 2016 election and its aftermath. It’s coming out on September 21st, although I’m hoping it will have at least limited release much earlier. He has said that he wants people to realize they must get out and vote in the 2018 midterms or the disaster which is our present government will only get worse.
And he does believe that, if we do not stop the catastrophe of a complete GOP takeover of all the branches of government, and perhaps even if we do, that a civil war may well be coming in this country. As for me, I realized that that could mean that someone hostile to actual American values could have command of all sorts of weapons, including atomic bombs.
If you think Trumptsters give a damn about, for instance, California (a whole state or 3 state-lets), you are very wrong. They would just as soon blow the West Coast off the map as shoot a round of golf at a Trump-branded property. They don’t care. Do you?
Am I being over the top? Perhaps. Maybe nobody would be willing to blow up LA. Maybe.
But Michael Moore was right about the 2016 election. Much as we might want him to be wrong about 2018, I greatly fear that he is absolutely right about the possibility of this country facing a new civil war, with or without nuclear weapons. And we have very little time to get real about what we are going to do to stop it.
