Thank you for taking the time to contact me about President Trump’s nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court. I appreciate hearing from you.
On July 9, 2018, President Trump nominated Judge Brett Kavanaugh to fill Justice Kennedy’s seat on the Supreme Court. Judge Brett Kavanaugh has impeccable credentials, serving on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the last decade and earning a reputation for being a mainstream, fair-minded jurist. Judge Kavanaugh undoubtedly has the right qualifications to serve as an associate justice on the Supreme Court.
Judge Kavanaugh received his bachelor’s degree and his Juris Doctor degree from Yale University. He clerked for United States Court of Appeals Judges Walter King Stapleton and Alex Kozinski. In addition, he also clerked for Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. He worked in private practice as a partner at Kirkland & Ellis LLP, where he specialized in appellate law. Prior to serving as a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, he served as Counsel, Assistant to the President, and Staff Secretary under President George W. Bush. In 2006, he was confirmed by the Senate to the D.C. Circuit, where he currently serves.
I look forward to meeting with Judge Kavanaugh in the coming weeks in advance of his confirmation hearing. I hope all my colleagues, regardless of their party affiliation, will ignore the pressure from partisan special interest groups by fairly and thoughtfully assessing Judge Kavanaugh based on his outstanding credentials and qualifications. As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which oversees nominations to the Supreme Court, I take this nomination and vetting process very seriously. Please know that I will continue taking an active approach to the Senate’s constitutional role in the advice and consent process.
Again, thank you for taking the time to contact me. Please do not hesitate to contact me again about other nominations that may come before the Senate.
