I’m no National Security wonk, but it strikes me that the Mueller investigation may have unique independence to pursue the Russian government’s cyberattacks as they continue unabated from the original attacks in 2016.
TRump, Ryan, and McConnell have been apparently dismantling our preparedness to counter future attacks ahead of the mid-terms. For all intents and purposes they appear complicit in providing a positive environment for even more egregious Russian hacking to occur.
Well, they have a terrible climate and a willing partner in crime.
If they simply hold the House and Senate in a plausible way: vote tallies skewed just enough in enough places, there are a lot of people who could stay in power and out of jail.
Our voting machines have been shown to be very open to hacking and many have no paper trail whatsoever to show if hacking has occurred.
Many smart people have opined that our voting system is too diverse and diffuse to be hackable in a way that would swing a major election… but never underestimate the abilities of an adversary with thousands of hackers, time to plan, and billions of dollars at their disposal.
So I am positing that Mueller, at the moment, is possibly a keystone in the ongoing effort to protect America from Russia waging cyber warfare to keep TRump and his minions in office and secure from prosecution. Those attacks are almost guaranteed, as they are Putin’s only surefire way to ensure victories for Trump’s supporters in Congress. Mueller also just clearly laid out that the Democrats’ Congressional strategy for 2016 was stolen and used very effectively at a granular level against us. So there is clearly precedence.
The biggest caveat is that the Independent Investigation is “limited” to the 2016 election. However, I would guess that by indicting people from within the Russian government’s intelligence group, Mueller can keep Putin and his hackers under intense scrutiny as long as the investigation continues.
Let’s hope that means long enough to catch them when they inevitably are at it again, Red-handed.
