As basically inconsequential as The View is to anything that really matters, there is substance to this argument between Republicans with Setmeyer who is a Never-Trumper who used to work for Dana Rohrbacher, and Meghan McCain who doesn’t support Trump either, particularly since her father has taken quite a bit of verbal abuse but she still argues in defense of his supporters and the so-called “validity” of their position.
Shrill though it is, this is a discussion that Republicans seriously need to have with each other.

Conservative commentator Tara Setmayer, who was a guest on Friday’s show, said she was aghast that Trump can get away with lying in such obvious ways without his fans ever questioning their faith in him.
“It’s a cult!” she exclaimed.
“Please stop saying that!” an upset McCain interjected. “You said that the last time you were here, it’s so redundant!”
Setmayer, however, would not back down.
“There’s a large group of people who blindly follow what this man says, that don’t think for themselves,” she said. “He can get away with saying things on tape and then calling it fake news! That is a cult!”
McCain said that calling Trump’s fans a “cult” was not helpful to understanding them.
“I defend his supporters because I understand it,” she said. “You’re painting everyone with a giant swathe
that everybody’s been brainwashed, that we’re all in a cult.”
Setmayer didn’t budge an inch.
“There’s a large group, including a lot of members of Congress, who have completely sold their principles down the river,” she said.
First off, Tara is absolutely correct. It is a big brainwashed, deluded cult. Trump can lie nonstop because they’ll just believe anything that he says and not bother to do any of their own independent research and will automatically reject any sources that aren’t sufficiently deferential to Republicans and Trump. They are willfully trapped in a thought bubble.
And they aren’t coming out of that bubble because they like it there. It’s safe. It’s protected. Everybody else in it constantly praises them, the hard working “Real” American, and denigrates the “Elites” with their theories, historical precedent, graphs, figures, documents and FACTS!!
They don’t need no stinking facts. They have their feelings, they’re gut feelings. They feel ignored, they feel insulted, they feel threatened, they feel marginalized.
Yeah, they are just starting to feel the way every other minority faction in this country has ALWAYS BEEN TREATED.
McCain toward the end of the segment when she finally gets a word in without having to screech over everyone else says that there are a lot of people like Steve Schmidt who have said “it’s over I’m a Democrat”, which is true. There are not enough of those people, but it’s true. There have been people like her father John McCain and Senator Jeff Flake who’ve stood up to Trump on principles — but even more rarely on votes — however those people are frankly very few and far between. Trump has total carte blanche within the GOP to do and say the most fucked up ridiculous totalitarian bullshit on a regular basis.
He’s seriously putting the jobs, health and lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans at deadly risk each and every day.
But Meghan McCain feels holding the GOP electorate accountable for these horrible outcomes is just going too far. It’s just not fair to hold someone responsible for their damn vote.
One of the other hosts says “There are a lot of people with conservative principles who have to ask ‘At what point am I giving up my humanity for this?’” which is exactly the right question. We’re talking here about descending into a deep pit of inhumanity. We’re already more than ankle deep in it with the family separation crisis, and I don’t see hardly of any of them coming forward and recognizing that fact.
But McCain still seems to think that the “feelings” of GOP voters is more important than the consequences of their action.
I have made the conscious choice, and I have more reason than anyone else here to dislike President Trump...but I’m sorry I’ve made the conscious choice to try and understand the voters, Understand what’s happening in the party. And by the way have some compassion for some people that feel that they didn’t have any other choice. And I think when we sit here in studios in Manhattan judging people in the middle of the country, we make no headway.
I get that. I do understand that. That’s bullshit.
We do know how the middle of the country feels, we’ve been repeatedly told how the middle of the country feels. They constantly whine about how they feel and they’re pretty expressive. Donald Trump is constantly telling us how they feel, and I for one believe him about that.
They’re an angry deluded bigoted paranoid cult.
Yeah, we all get that they thought they were voting in their own economic interests in desperate frustration because Trump sold them a gold-plated pile of crap about how all their troubles are other people’s fault — immigrants, China, Mexico, Muslims, Gold Star Fathers aligned with ISIS, Fake War Heroes with band-aide purple hearts, angry, violent, unpatriotic Black People who are just so ungrateful for all the job and loan discrimination, #PermitPattys, police persecution, Jim Crow, Slavery, red-lining and Voting Rights suppression, gays who are taking their rights away by trying to start their own families, uppity women who claim to need birth control medicine for medical reasons, y’know "THEM” — and so they have no personal responsibility for anything.
But that was a con job.
There is no reaching out and bridging the gap with them. They don’t live in the same multiversal dimension as the rest of us. They don’t give a FUCK about the rest of us. They don’t give a shit about welfare recipients (even when most of them are the ones on welfare programs), they don’t give a shit about people who need healthcare (even though that means them too), they don’t give a shit about Muslims, or Migrants, Refugees or their children who are likely to be raped or killed if America rejects them, or Black people being assaulted and murdered by police, or LGBTQ being harassed, shunned, fired and assaulted in the streets. They’ve made it crystal clear: They don’t care about anyone except themselves.
They think America can bully it’s way into diplomacy and better trade deals when literally no one thinks that’s true and even though it’s starting to seriously bite them in ass with job losses in the midst of Trump’s trade tariff madness, they still can’t come to admit they’ve been wrong the entire time. They don’t understand due process, they don’t understand probable cause, they don’t understand that all refugees are not terrorists or MS-13 gangsters, meanwhile they give tacit support to actual neo-Nazi and neo-Confederate alt-Right terrorism and they don’t understand our constitutional and international obligations to preserve human rights, that you can’t always surrender to fear and paranoia, and that you have to be brave in the face of danger to preserve humanity.
And they don’t care that they don’t know about any of that.
Everything about them is hateful, and they don’t understand why they get feared and hated in return after they openly choose to support a open hate-monger.
Republicans need to decide if they believe in American values, it’s real values, or they believe in bigoted bullshit.
We know who they are, and they’re not terribly rational. We don’t need to understand them, we don’t need to give those precious little bigoted snowflakes a “safe space” to openly express their ignorant conspiratorial paranoid bullshit.
We need to defeat them. Period.
