The real history lesson about the know-nothings by real historians at Britannica.com
The Know-Nothing party, byname of American Party, U.S. political party that flourished in the 1850s. The Know-Nothing party was an outgrowth of the strong anti-immigrant and especially anti-Roman Catholic sentiment that started to manifest itself during the 1840s. A rising tide of immigrants, primarily Germans in the Midwest and Irish in the East, seemed to pose a threat to the economic and political security of native-born Protestant Americans. In 1849 the secret Order of the Star-Spangled Banner formed in New York City, and soon after lodges formed in nearly every other major American city.
Members, when asked about their nativist organizations, were supposed to reply that they knew nothing, hence the name. As its membership and importance grew in the 1850s, the group slowly shed its clandestine character and took the official name American Party. As a national political entity, it called for restrictions on immigration, the exclusion of the foreign-born from voting or holding public office in the United States, and for a 21-year residency requirement for citizenship.
By 1852 the Know-Nothing party was achieving phenomenal growth. It did very well that year in state and local elections, and with passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854 it won additional adherents from the ranks of conservatives who could support neither the proslavery Democrats nor antislavery Republicans. When Congress assembled on Dec. 3, 1855, 43 representatives were avowed members of the Know-Nothing party. Reference Britannica

It was a reaction among a segment of the population of strong anti-immigrant and the anti-Islam sentiment that started to manifest itself during 2015-17. A rising tide of immigrants, primarily Mexicans and refugees from Central America seemed to pose a threat to the economic and political security of angry native-born White Protestant Americans.

By 2018 the Trump Party was achieving phenomenal growth. It did very well that year in state and local elections, and with the placing to Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court, it won additional adherents from the ranks of conservatives facing reelection who could support neither the incarceration of children nor deportation of every undocumented resident. When Congress assembled after the GOP won the Senate and retain the House representatives Trump Party a majority of Republican in Congress were avowed members of the Trump Party.
After the 2018 elections, the Republicans and Democrats each won 50 seats requiring the vice president to be there for every vote. The Democrats won a narrow victory in the Senate and reclaimed chairmanship of all committees. These were done parallel with the Mueller investigation which was stalled because the Supreme Court refused to grant subpoenas for audio recordings which had been made by FBI agents alarmed that there was evidence Trump and Putin were engaging in a conspiracy, There was, it later turned out, incriminating evidence in some of the recorded Trump conversations.
Congress began multiple investigations. the Senate whose committees had co-chairs and an equal number of members and House opened aggressive investigations. They approved funds to increase the number of staff lawyers and investigators tenfold.
On Feb. 14, 2020, later to be known as the Second St. Valentines Day Massacre, both House and Senate introduced, for the fourth time in history, a bill to censure the president. They voted almost unanimously to censure President Donald J. Trump for a bill of particulars including conspiracy to undermine the US Consitution in a conspiracy with a hostile head of state, and lesser transgressions from breaking the emoluments clause, campaign finance law, fraud, and other more lurid but less important items. The censure was almost identical to the bill of impeachment which had stalled in the House Judicial Committee.
Every Senate Republican with the exception of Rand Paul and every House Republican with the exception of Louie Gohmert, Robert Goodlatte, and Trey Gowdy voted for censure.
Trump, managed to hold onto hopes that the crisis would end as he traversed the country to dwindling rally crowds during months of the open Congressional hearings. Mueller had stopped calling witnesses and there was speculation he was working on a final report to Congress.
In the committees, there was a parade of witnesses describing illegal acts they observed numerous crimes committed by Trump. Some testified under immunity and they admitted to being a co-conspirator with the president himself.
At 9:45 PM on Feb. 14th the news broke first in The New York Times which Rachel Maddow had a copy of before any other talk show host on the air live at the time. Trump, was at the officially designated as a National Landmark, Trump’s Winter White House, for President’s Day Weekend. He did not post a single Tweet. Early Monday morning @DonaldJTrump was silent although every journalist in the world and was watching to see if there would be a Tweet.
At 5:10 AM the president Tweeted his last Tweet as president. Afterword:
Melani Trump divorced Donald J. Trump on Feb. 14th, 2022. Her lawyer was Michael Avanti. She got sole custody of Barron and the divorce settlement proved Trump’s net worth was much less than Trump would have wanted the public to believe. Aside from lifetime child support payments, she received alimony estimated to be between $10 -20 million a year, ownership of the apartment in Trump Tower, and a cash settlement of $500,000,000. Analysts estimate that this essentially leaves Trump bankrupt, about to sell most of his properties and businesses, owing millions in legal fees, and at least $1 billion to Russian controlled banks which he can’t possibly repay.
After The Edible Cannabis Started To Kick In Afterword:
Following his resignation and divorce, Trump was desperate for money, recognition for his accomplishments, and a return to glory.
Without the government to pay for trips to hold rallies he couldn’t criss-cross the country to bask in affection from his dwindling number of diehard fans, those still who holding onto the belief that he was a victim or a deep state conspiracy and fake news. Polls showed that while his approval numbers had dropped precipitously about 10-15% of the population wished he was still president.
Trump appeared only once on television. This was six months after his resignation. With what presidential historian Michael Beschloss called sublime irony he was interviewed on MSNBC and NBC by Andrea Mitchell.
Within a few months, late-night comedians tired of making jokes about him, although Saturday Night Live did a wildly popular skit with Alex Baldwin reprising his role of Trump.
In it, he begged the real Stormy Daniels to appear with her in what had gone from being the “Make America Horny Again” tour which played small venues around the country to become a glitzy extravaganza called “Simply Stormy” playing to sold-out crowds at The Bellagio in Las Vegas.
Trump shopped a book hoping for an advance from a major publisher. Asked to submit an initial treatment from the only publisher who expressed interest, IDG Books, the publisher of the “for Dummies” how-to books, he was unable to find a ghostwriter who would work on spec.
The Fox News Rumors
Fox News fired Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham without explanation. They moved Sheperd Smith to a prime time slot.
When Trump came begging for something, anything, told him they would get back to him. They never did.
David Corn reported that big changes were coming at Fox News. He talked to three anonymous sources at Fox News and at News Corp that Rupert Murdoch’s wife Jerry Hall had become friends with Melania Trump and Emmanuel Macron. This was after they attended the first state dinner held by Melania Trump for Emmanuel Macron.
Sources said that since they met, Melania confided in Jerry Hall, talked to her husband about Trump. She conveyed damaging information about him and his erratic dangerous behavior, his disregard for the truth, and how Putin was holding sway over him to her husband. In part, because of feeling responsible for Trump’s election Murdoch was said to be thinking of turning Fox News into a reputable news source with balanced opinion shows.
Trump Fades: Going, Going, Gone
Trump was said to have gone on bended knee to both David Pecker and Steve Bannon but he couldn’t convince them to publish a column under his name in the former’s National Enquirer or on the latter’s Breitbart.
Everywhere he turned to find work or ego boosting exposure the answer was "no."
Trump was able to keep his residence at Mar-a-Lago by selling half-acre house lots where the golf course was for an affordable housing development, much to the dismay of the wealthy neighbors. The view from his bedroom there was acres of modest tract homes.
Ivanka and Jared Kushner were not been seen together since the resignation and are rumors in TMZ that they have legally separated. The 7000 ft. home they rent for $15,000 a month Washington, DC appears to be dark at night.
Trump is reported to have only two close friends, Rudy Guiliani who he visits in the memory care unit of a facility in the Catskills, and longtime bodyguard Keith Schiller who he plays golf with. Rolling Stone reports that a source close to Schiller says he no longer lets Trump win.

Here’s a chance to exercise your funny bone. Speculate on what the cast of Trumpian characters will be doing several years from now. For example, ripped from today’s headlines, where will Carter Page be next year?
