Ever since the dark days of November 2016, Pennsylvania Democrats have come roaring back.
As Abraham Lincoln said in 1854, as the people of the North were stunned at the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act by Stephan A. Douglass, a law that spread slavery:
”He should remember that he took us by surprise — astounded us — by this measure. We were thunderstruck and stunned; and we reeled and fell in utter confusion. But we rose each fighting, grasping whatever he could first reach — a scythe — a pitchfork — a chopping axe, or a butcher's cleaver. We struck in the direction of the sound; and we are rapidly closing in upon him. He must not think to divert us from our purpose, by showing us that our drill, our dress, and our weapons, are not entirely perfect and uniform. When the storm shall be past, he shall find us still Americans; no less devoted to the continued Union and prosperity of the country than heretofore.”
Connor Lamb in Western PA was the first Democrat to flip a Congressional seat since then. He is now ahead double digits in a new poll in his new district. We have new Congressional maps that are allowing for fair districts and real elections. Total hacks and cowards like incumbent Republican Ryan Costello are not even bothering to run because they can’t win in a fair election.
Montgomery County outside of Philadelphia is the third largest county in the state. It now has a Congressional district that takes in most of the county. State Rep. Madeline Dean is the Democratic nominee, and she is heavily favored to win. Democrats control the county government and have cleaned up the mess left by the Republican fiscal mismanagement. Democrats control every line office and made big inroads into local offices all over the county in 2017.
Sadly, the state legislature is still a gerrymandered mess. A number of Republicans have sat pretty since 2011 in districts that were designed so they couldn’t lose.
Well Montco Democrats are fighting back now with a coordinated campaign. Hundreds of volunteers are canvassing for down ballot candidates that can win! The Montco GOP is so scared they sent out an unintentionally hilarious mailer begging for volunteers while showing the supposed Democratic volunteers looking like AntiFa radicals.
Katie Muth who is featured in a “Huffington Post” documentary on women running for office is running for the Senate District 44 in one of the top flip opportunities in state senate, or Linda Fields a lifetime labor organizer for Senate District 24. In the State House we have phenomenal candidates like Joe Webster, Joe Ciresi, Melissa Shusterman, Pam Hacker. These Republicans are running scared and trying to play the “I am independent” or “I am a moderate” schtick, but it is wearing thin.
As a coordinated campaign there is a “All for one” feel to it now. People are writing postcards, knocking doors, making phone calls, etc. As Abraham Lincoln also once said, “Those not skinning can hold a leg.”
