Russian asset Donald Trump took a few minutes away from his tweeting on Friday to have a meeting with his "most senior national security advisers" on securing this fall's election from Russian interference.
A very few minutes, considering the gravity of the discussion: less than 30 minutes. He did have to leave for the weekend to go golfing, and we all know what his real priorities are. He didn't take questions after the meeting, but the White House released a statement: "The president has made it clear that his administration will not tolerate foreign interference in our elections from any nation state or other malicious actors."
Despite—or perhaps because of—its brevity, one senior administration officials called it a "good meeting" in which "Everybody was on the same page. We're doing a lot of good work across the administration." Sure. Under the circumstances, maybe a half hour with Trump on election security is adequate. It's not like his national security team would want to spend a long time briefing him on actions the government might be taking to safeguard the elections.
After all, Trump is a big security risk. He spent four times as long—a full two hours—meeting with Vladimir Putin, and since none of his staff was allowed in the room, they have no idea what national security beans were spilled. In this case, maybe the less Trump knows the better.
