Amidst all of Tuesday’s extraordinary legal drama for the GOP, Democrats were quietly making another bit of history—the good kind—all on their own: With former state House Minority Leader Mary Throne’s victory in Wyoming’s gubernatorial primary, Democrats have now nominated 10 women for governor across the nation. That beats the party’s previous record of nine, set in 2002. (Republicans, by the way, have nominated just four women this year.)
Here’s the full roster so far:
- Stacey Abrams (Georgia)
- Paulette Jordan (Idaho)
- Laura Kelly (Kansas)
- Janet Mills (Maine)
- Gretchen Whitmer (Michigan)
- Michelle Lujan Grisham (New Mexico)
- Kate Brown (Oregon)
- Lupe Valdez (Texas)
- Christine Hallquist (Vermont)
- Mary Throne (Wyoming)
And note that this tally is likely to go higher still, as Democratic women could win nods for governor in several more states that have yet to hold their primaries. It’s all part of an extroardinary election cycle that has seen record-smashing numbers of Democratic women run for office at every level.
But prevailing in primaries is just the first step. To reshape America and take this country in a more progressive direction, these candidates need to win in November. That’s why Daily Kos has endorsed two of these exceptional women who are running in two of the most important races for governor, Stacey Abrams in Georgia and Gretchen Whitmer in Michigan.
Please contribute $3 to Abrams and Whitmer to ensure that we truly make this the new Year of the Woman.
