Donald Trump is apparently so desperate to change the subject away from the criminal pleas and probes of his longtime associates (and family members) and his headline-grabbing disrespect of John McCain that he hastily announced the press could cover his live call with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, hailing a not-yet-finalized trade deal with Mexico, despite the fact that Mexican officials have repeatedly said they are not interested in a trade deal without Canada. Nevertheless, here is Donald Trump bumbling as Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto keeps him on hold before eventually congratulating the direction their negotiating teams have made toward updating NAFTA.
No details on the agreement, just a pat on the back that discussions are underway, but do note that President Nieto still calls the agreement NAFTA, something that is a sticking point with Donald Trump, who really, really wants a new name, even if the bones the agreement are the same as NAFTA.
President Enrique Peña Nieto quickly took to Twitter to emphasize they want any deal to include Canada, something they have insisted on since the beginning.
Nieto sent another tweet emphasizing Canada should be included in any agreement, which he continues to call NAFTA.
Furthermore, Nieto said he’d personally called Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to update him and emphasize the necessity of trilateral negotiations.
At least one member of Congress took to Twitter to complain that nobody in Congress has been briefed on any deals.
