One of the great tricks the Republican Party has been able to play on the United States is their pretension that they care the most about our armed services members. It’s a great trick considering that at every turn, the conservative movement in our country has put veterans and their families at risk, voted against real legislation and budgets that would help returning soldiers and their families, in order to make some money for people who like to start wars for profit.
Bloomberg reporter Sahil Kapur posted the a letter, purported to be from Trump to Speaker Paul Ryan, to Twitter. It’s a letter from Donald J. Trump (probably written by some guy checking his stocks on the phone in his other hand), announcing his “alternative plan” of shutting off civilian federal employees pay raises for this coming year. The actual line from Trump comes in the fourth paragraph and goes a little something like:
Specifically, I have determined that for 2019, both across-the-board pay increases and locality pay increases will be set at zero.
Something important to understand about freezing these federal workers’ pay raises is that around a third of all federal workers are veterans. This is a pay freeze that affects veterans, and this includes disabled veterans for which special noncompetitive hiring practices have been put into place.
The letter states that by freezing locality pay increases, Trump would be saving $25 billion. Surprisingly, there is no mention of the enormous hundreds of billions of dollars going to the rich in additional tax breaks.
