Say this for Ted Cruz: He’s always been a sniveling, soul-less creep desperate for power at any cost.
Throughout the 2016 GOP primary, Trump absolutely abused Cruz — among other indignities, Trump called his wife ugly and uh, suggested his dad was involved in the murder of JFK. Of course, Ted Cruz is a man who deserves zero sympathy, so I wouldn’t call him one of Trump’s many victims, but still, the guy got covered in the most acidic of Trump’s venomous verbal vomit.
So of course, he’s turned himself into a groveling sycophant since Trump moved his golden toilet and Fox News TV into the White House — and now he’s so afraid of Beto O’Rourke, the incredible Democratic congressman breathing down his neck, he’s basically begging Trump to come save him.
From the Houston Chronicle:
“I would certainly welcome his support, and I hope to see him in Texas,” Cruz said, standing outside the Dixie Grill in Seguin. “I think we are likely to see the president down in Texas before the election.”
Cruz said while his relationship with Trump has had its “ups and downs” due to their 2016 GOP primary battle, he has tried to become an ally to the president. He said he has been in constant contact with the White House and Trump directly to offer his help in getting legislation through the Senate.
“We’re talking to the White House every week, sometimes every day,” Cruz said. “I’ve been proud to lead the effort to bring Republicans together.”
Whether Trump will actually be useful remains to be seen. He takes credit for the GOP’s narrow OH-12 win last night, but he was the reason it was so close in the first place. He underperformed in Texas in 2016 and his approval rating there isn’t particularly impressive — 38% disapprove strongly, far more than the 29% of maniacs that approve strongly (bigly?).
More importantly, momentum is clearly on the other side. O’Rourke has nearly pulled even in the polls, even with much lower name recognition amongst Texas voters — he’s from El Paso, not exactly the biggest media market in the state, and 43% of voters say they don’t know enough about him yet.
That should change. O’Rourke has been running a grassroots campaign, barnstorming every Texas county. He still hasn’t aired his first TV ads yet. And yet, Houston Public Media splashed this headline yesterday: “With O’Rourke Gaining Momentum, Cruz’s November Alarm Hits New Volume”

Cruz is seen as scrambling and on the defensive and the narrative is changing. Cruz released three disgusting, misleading new ads on Friday, which may have been effective in the past, but immediately earned blowback and a huge fundraising response from O’Rourke’s team over the weekend — they raised over $1.2 million on the backs of those negative ads.
And as we know, O’Rourke is no mealy-mouthed southern centrist. He’s a true progressive. He’s openly in favor of Medicare for All, marijuana legalization, a woman’s right to choose, and so many other imperative policies.
Winning the Texas seat would be an impossibly huge victory for Democrats. It would absolutely rearrange the political map. It would remove Ted Cruz from the national conversation. It would skyrocket Democrats’ chances of taking back the Senate. It would shift policy discussion irrevocably left. It would be a dream come true.
