The sexual assault allegations against Donald Trump’s Supreme Court pick offer us a great view of the two parties in action. Two Republicans have gone as far as most Democrats in calling for the committee vote on Brett Kavanaugh to be delayed—but both Jeff Flake and Bob Corker are retiring from the Senate, and neither seems to be seriously threatening a “no” vote. Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who is not retiring, has said the committee “might” have to delay the vote. But that’s the far edge of the Republican Party as far as taking sexual assault seriously when a Supreme Court seat is at stake.
Out on the campaign trail:
Democratic Senate candidate Phil Bredesen, who is running to replace Corker, is also calling for the hearings to be delayed, an aide said, while Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee said the nomination should go forward.
Hi there, contrast! Bredesen, by the way, is leading in a new poll.
But that’s your Republican Party in 2018.
Contribute now to take back the Senate.
