Lacking the votes to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, Donald Trump bowed to the pressure applied by a small group of Senators Friday and ordered the FBI to conduct a supplemental background check into Kavanaugh.
The inquiry is to be completed in less than a week and, according to the Senate Judiciary Committee statement, it will be limited to “current credible allegations against the nominee.”
While it’s still unclear what the exact parameters of the investigation will be (e.g. what’s deemed credible?), a further fact-finding mission is effectively what Democrats have been pushing for weeks.
It’s a rare concession for the White House, which came out with guns blazing just as soon as Thursday’s hearing wrapped up. Senate Republicans clearly didn’t have the votes. Trump went so for as to tell reporters in the Oval Office Friday that he found Dr. Christine Blasey Ford to be a “compelling” witness.
"I thought her testimony was very compelling and she looks like a very fine woman to me,” Trump said, adding that he was also dazzled by Kavanaugh’s testimony.
