Facing an audience that wasn’t as supportive as he is used to, Kris Kobach found that being booed isn’t so much fun — but when push came to shove, the Republican candidate couldn’t hide his frustration and lost his cool, attacking supporters of medical marijuana
When asked about the legalization of medical marijuana, Kobach indicated it was only a gateway to recreational marijuana, and that would “NEVER” happen in Kansas.
As boos rose in Hutchinson, Kansas, Kobach finally delivered his thoughts, and the Kansas City Star pointed out it was a doozy:
When they booed his opposition to legalizing either medical or recreational marijuana, he invited them to “go eat some Doritos, c’mon!”
Kobach’s frustration wasn’t just with medical marijuana supporters; responding to a question about arming school teachers, Kobach informed the crowd that “the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” When boos went through the crowd, Kobach — a Republican who homeschools his children — launched into a strange defense: “Because I want my children to live!” — no word on how safe the Kobach household is that a homeschool parent would worry about a school shooter.
In internal polling done last spring, nearly 70% of Kansans supported medical marijuana. A record number, especially among young people, also supported full legalization. Kobach’s dismissal reflects some of his base, but his flippant response to those in pain may also be remembered. Laura Kelly, the Democratic candidate, noted that whatever could be done to lower opioid addiction should be done, and that medical marijuana legalization should come to Kansas.
Simply put: Kobach relishes a cruel position. And that should surprise no one.
