Last night, in the midst of yet another utterly irrational Twitter melt down, Trump suddenly Tweeted the following:
Does Trump not know that Turkey has been a member of NATO since 1952? That if he tries economic sanctions on Turkey he is attacking our ally? Or that, gawd forbid, if he tried a military strike against Turkey for ignoring his threats, that ALL of our other allies are obliged (by rules that Trump claims he can unilaterally ignore — and which Trump made damn sure our allies KNOW he thinks he can leave them to hang of they get attacked) to come to Turkey’s aid AGAINST the United States?
Last week John Bolton enraged Turkey by saying that, “US withdrawal [from Syria] was contingent upon Turkey's pledge not to attack US-backed Kurdish fighters in Syria once troops leave.” To which
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan replied "Bolton made a serious mistake. If he thinks that way, he is in a big mistake. We will not compromise," Turkey isn’t going to start taking its marching orders from the orange loony in the White House or his trained barking mustache. Trump’s slap-dash withdrawal from Syria is going to have serious consequences and he will be utterly unable to manage them or fix his blunders.
Trump’s utter military, political, and diplomatic incompetence has always been on display, but he has never before started threatening to attack our allies like this.
Not to mention that Turkey is only our 32nd largest trade partner with about $8.5 billion going each way every year. That’s a lot of money, but it represents only 0.09% of Turkey’s $909 billion economy. An amount Turkey could easily make up with other trading partners, they way China did with soy beans, and in the process devastated (there’s that word, again) the US soybean market. Funny how the only place Trump ever manages to “devastate” is the United States.
Once again, Trump is screaming like a madman, making impulsive threats he cannot back up, short of employing the military might of the United States. A might that CAN NOT be used against a NATO ally without bringing the wrath of most of the world down on our heads. He’s leaving Syria to hang, allowing ISIS to regroup, and barking threats at our allies.
Gosh, I wonder who would benefit from the dissolution of NATO, or the US’s withdrawal? Yet more evidence, if any were needed, that Trump serves his master in Russia, and not the people of the United States.
This blundering thug has got to go.
