Over the past week or so, right-wing propagandists have been in a frenzy to bring down new Democrat congresswoman Alexandra Ocásio-Cortez, a frenzy fuelled by their bewilderment that none of their usual smear tactics worked. In fact, most of it backfired, helping AOC to achieve greater attention for her causes and broad discussion on subjects suppressed in public discussion since Reagan’s time, like high marginal tax rates for the rich.
This blowback for right-wing propaganda against AOC has reached such epic proportions that some are calling on fellow right-wingers to stop talking about her. Ironically, calls to stop talking about her are also talking about her, working against their very purpose.
For example, there is neo-Nazi (or as he calls himself, “unapologetic Nationalist”) Tom Binnz, who posted a YouTube video titled We Need to Stop Giving Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Attention!!!! (BTW feel free add your dislike there.)
There are actually interesting things in Binzz’s rant. For example, he thinks the right should just let centrist Democrats destroy progressives like AOC, and the attention the Right gives to her will instead force them to defend her. Also, he is open about the right-wing strategy of quote-mining for use for attacks in re-election campaigns years later. But other parts are hilarious: when the first thing he says about her reveals his crush on her, when he thinks the DNC will groom her as an Obama 2.0 (and she would need advice on how to hold speeches...), when at the end he himself realises that his own video works against its titular goal.
What really made me crack up were the comments, which largely professed agreement but just continued the trend of the right-wing obsession with AOC. Particularly funny is how most of these obviously not too bright people needed to express their opinion that she is stupid.
But, I really do hope that she is getting adequate security. She is the maximum trigger to the worst part of the extreme edge of this crowd, the misogynist and racist creeps who can be upset enough to entertain ideas of an assassination.
