A couple weeks ago I wrote a diary saying that the shutdown might last longer than we think. My point was that Trump and the Republicans like the shutdown. This is their fantasy. Show that government doesn’t matter. Close down the EPA and the Education Department. Ruin the TSA. As Rachel Maddow said last night, mess up the FBI and other security agencies. Imagine how thrilled Putin must be!
People debated me, writing that it would end soon. But so far I don’t see a sign of it.
It takes 60 Senate votes to reopen the government, if I understand correctly. I am not sure why that is or if the rules could be changed. But anyways even when President Harris takes office in 2020, I think we will be lucky if the Dems have more than 50 seats in the Senate, hard to see that they would have 60 seats.
This means that theoretically an open government may never happen again. It could be something like glaciers or record players, part of history.
