Daily Kos is thrilled to announce that Del. Jennifer Boysko has won Virginia State Senate District 33 in the first special election of 2019. Boysko will replace Jennifer Wexton, who resigned her seat after winning election to the U.S. House in November.
Daily Kos was pleased to support Boysko in this Virginia Senate election (raising over $36,000 for her campaign in just five weeks), as this win was essential if Democrats are going to flip this closely divided chamber this fall. This victory not only keeps a progressive fighter in this seat, but it also keeps Team Blue within just one seat of ending the GOP majorities in both the state House and Senate. This November, Virginia Democrats have a landmark opportunity to win complete control of the commonwealth in 2019 for the first time in a quarter century.
Boysko’s triumph is the first step toward establishing Democratic majorities in the legislature in 2019—and a blue Virginia for years to come.
Boyko’s victory over Republican Joe May was huge—a margin of 70-30—and it reflects the growing blue trend of this district. Democrat Wexton won the seat 57-43 percent in 2015, and Hillary Clinton’s margin in this district a year later was 63-31. Boysko will have no trouble keeping SD-33 in the Democratic column this fall.
