While Mike Pompeo has been presented as the adult in the room he is, in fact, a hardcore Dominionst who has said he “As a Christian, I certainly believe that’s possible” that Donald Trump has been “raised for such a time as this, just like Queen Esther, to help save the Jewish people from the Iranian menace?”
And in his foreign policy:
“...no secretary of state in recent decades has been as open and fervent as Mr. Pompeo about discussing Christianity and foreign policy in the same breath. That has increasingly raised questions about the extent to which evangelical beliefs are influencing American diplomacy.

But now somehow the front page of the Department of State (shown here) is touting Mike Pompeo’s achievement in “Being a Christian Leader” as is that is an appropriate thing for the government to be trumpeting.
I won’t link to the video of his talk — it’s pretty mild compared to the things that Barr said about “secularism” recently. But if you watch remember Pompeo is famous for brow beating staff — throwing binders is apparently a favorite tactic — when he humble brags about how he treats his staff with respect.
But ultimately the problem is that the State Department seems to thing that a move which would seem to clearly violate the first amendment of separation of church and state is fine to promote on the front page of their website. And compared to the crimes being committed around them I’m sure it will pass unnoticed and unpunished into the dark annals of the history of this lawless administration.
Whether this is the last attempt to remind the Christian Right voters that Trump needs to be protected to continue this “good work” (see also Barr’s recent comments) or they’ve just reached the point where they know that can be open about violating the constitution because they have no shame I don’t know. Probably a combination of both.
