Sorry this is going to be relatively thin. A magnitude 4.5 quake (briefly bumped up to 4.7, then back down to 4.5 again) hit in Pleasant Hill, CA, a suburb about 15 miles or so east of San Francisco, around 10:33 pm, PDT, Monday evening. It was preceded by a 2.5 magnitude fore shock about ten minutes prior.
I live in a steel frame, reinforced mid-rise building in downtown San Francisco so what I felt was pretty muted but things swayed for about ten seconds and I could hear cracking sounds (really just various things like non-bearing walls shifting). Got my heart rate up for a minute or so.
The USGS map shows reports of the quake having been felt from north of Santa Rosa, CA, about 60 miles north of San Francisco) to the vicinity of Santa Cruz, approximately the same distance south. I have friends all over the area who’ve reported almost everything from not noticing it at all (my partner in fact slept right through it) to reporting that friends of theirs had seen minor damage, mostly falling pictures and dishes and the like.
It’s still early though and it’s possible there may be some moderate damage in the immediate vicinity of the epicenter. BART reported it was running trains at reduced speeds...but not stopping them...until they’re sure there’s no damage to their infrastructure.
Here is the USGS report on the quake.
Thursday, October 17, marks the thirtieth anniversary of the Loma Prieta quake which did major damage all over Northern California.
