The more Congress moves toward impeaching Donald Trump, the more Americans support both impeachment and the actions being taken by Congress, according to Gallup polling released Wednesday. In fact, support for Trump's impeachment and removal hit 52% with 46% opposing. It’s an almost exact flip from the polling that followed the release of special counsel Robert Mueller's report, when 45% supported and 53% opposed impeachment/removal.
That 52% support for impeachment/removal includes 6% of Republicans, 89% of Democrats, and 55% of independents (a 9-point uptick in support among independents since June).
But if Democrats needed reassurance that they are on the right track with impeachment, the Gallup poll certainly offered some backing. As bad as Congress’ approval rating is, it jumped from 18% in June to 25% now, representing a 15-point spike among Democrats and a 6-point bump among independents (19% to 25%).
Trump's approval rating, however, has remained effectively flat, gaining just 1 point from June until now, from 39% to 40%. "It is on the low end of the 37% to 46% range recorded in 2019 so far, with the 37% readings coming in January during the government shutdown," writes Gallup.
