Good evening from the past! I’m writing this at 9am Eastern, on my way to Dallas for a week. The weekdays will be with family who live in the metro-Dallas suburbs, then this weekend I’ll be in a hotel conference room having fun and making music with 70 musicians and fans all connected via the virtual world of Second Life. So I’ll be mostly offline, but didn’t want to leave us in a Tuesday Tops lurch! Grab a beverage and after a quick read of how each of us can submit nominations, hop below the story break and lets pay homage to what some seem intent on demonizing… science and technology!
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
I woke this morning using the alarm on my phone. A device which in my lifetime has morphed from something attached to the wall that did one thing... let people talk to one another, grew into a mobile phase that let us send text messages (and also play snake), and now has more capabilities than my first several computers.
I used it to schedule a ride to the airport at 4:30am, paid for the ride via a credit card linked to ApplePay, and checked in with a kiosk that recognized me via a barcode scan.
I read a book on my iPhone that is synced to the iPad I’m typing on now, meaning I’m not carrying paper. And when I boarded the plane, I snapped a photo on it to send to Mr. Brillig and K2.
But wait, there’s more. I’m typing this at 30000 feet, which in and of itself is pretty damned amazing, via the on-board wifi (thank you, JetBlue!) as I watch the latest Spiderman movie, my choice from the hundreds of tv channels, movies and other onboard entertainment.
I’m vaccinated against a host of illnesses (although I’m late on a flu shot so #thoughtsandprayers that I’m not exposed before I get back home).
How did we get to a place where a sizeable minority of the population believes charlatans over chemists, narcissists over neuroscientists, and faux talk show hosts over the smart scientists and technology experts? Because from where I sit somewhere over Kentucky, I owe those amazing people my entire experience today.
Come talk science and tech (or pooties and dinner!) in the comments, after first perusing the trio of Top Comments, Mojo and Pictures we’ve provided every night since mid-2006! Thanks to BeninSC for making the Trio happen! I’ll try to drop into the comments tonight, but if I don’t make it in please play nicely!
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
Note: Please remember that comment inclusion in Top Comments does not constitute support or endorsement by diarist, formatter, Top Comments writers or DailyKos. Questions, complaints or comments? Contact brillig.
From belinda ridgewood:
In Dartagnan's diary of Ambassador Taylor's statement, ksmoore777 aptly summed up both Taylor's situation and Trump's evil.
Can you tell I am so here for Taylor's statement? In Mark Sumner's diary about Ambassador Taylor's statement, niemann offers imagined GOP response to an actual smoking gun, sadly right on the money.
From ksmoore777:
Loved how this comment by gchaucer2 speaks to the spreading spotlight of today's testimony by Taylor!
From BeninSC:
I am submitting this insightful comment by Major Kong about the ‘ultimate name drop.’ Agreed.
Highlighted by gchaucer2:
Is this fine comment by CocoaLove on the cowardice of those who will not speak publicly about Twitler.
Highlighted by Cmae:
Is this comment by dsnottselliott with a strategy recommendation for dealing with the GOP, its fear of subpoenas and public perception.
