Memorial services for Rep. Elijah Cummings were held at the U.S. Capitol on Thursday, where the congressman was lying in state, the first black lawmaker in the nation’s history to do so. Among those paying respects to the chairman of the House Oversight Committee were family, friends, and colleagues, including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Durning the ceremony under the rotunda of the Capitol building, pallbearer Bobby Rankin made his way down the line, shaking hands until he got to the Senate leader, and that’s when astute viewers noticed the snub. Twitter user Moni jay posted the video, and it quickly went viral.
Rankin shifted a paper to his right hand and went directly to Speaker Pelosi. Mitch McConnell stood there looking stunned.
Funeral services for Elijah Cummings were scheduled for Friday, where Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be speaking.
